The Power of Breath
Breath is our very life force and it has the power to change our entire state of being, especially our moods and state of mind, and therefore our body as well. Try these simple exercises to start to take control of your life by steadying your breath. Learn how to use the breath in different ways to get the effect you seek.
Square Breathing
Sit comfortably and relax. Close your eyes. Take a moment to notice how you are feeling. Focus on your breath. Breathe in for the count of 4, hold your breath for the count of 4, breathe out for the count of 4, and then hold the breath out for the count of 4. Breathe in once again and repeat this sequence 5 times at your own pace. Note the difference in how you feel.
Benefits
This square, or 'box breathing' as it is sometimes called, expands your energy out from your heart through your body, expands your mental horizons and allows you to be more willing to share your gifts. Use it to have a more expanded feeling of life, relieve nervous tension, and enter a state of positive quietness.
1 Minute of Peace
Take regular moments in your day to give yourself one minute of peace. Each time you stop for a drink or step away from your desk allow yourself to sit or stand tall (gaze out of a window to a broader vision if you can). Breathe gently and slowly into your belly, then chest then shoulders and reverse to breathe out. Repeat 5 times. You will feel your energy lift. This is called '3-part breath'. Once you are used to the method you can do more rounds.
Benefits
You will find this instantly calms your nervous system and relieves anxiety. Breathing in this way also circulates your lymphatics to cleanse and reduce fluid retention. Your mind will centre and focus.
